How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine and a natural holistic healing approach that can be used to improve general health and wellbeing.

Acupuncture works by placing very fine, sterile, solid, metal disposable needles into the skin at specific acupoints to trigger a response from the body. It is a minimally invasive approach that stimulates nerve rich areas of the skin surface in order to influence tissues, glands, organs and various bodily functions.

Each acupuncture needle produces a reaction through the skin which sends a signal to tell the body that it needs to respond. This response involves stimulation of the immune system, promoting increased blood flow and circulation, natural wound healing and pain modulation to the affected area.

Our Treatments

Here at Natural Hair Health Acupuncture, our mission is to support our clients with honesty and integrity in a caring and friendly environment using our results based approach.

On your first visit, you will be greeted by Dr Oscar Lee (Acupuncture) and welcomed into a private consultation room. Dr Lee (Acupuncture) will then analyse and explain how acupuncture can assist your health condition and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

An individualised plan will then be presented and informed consent will be required to start sessions.

You will then be ready for your first Acupuncture session where we carefully explain where each needle is placed and what effect it will have on your body. Once all the needles are in place, you will be able to relax while the needles do their job.

After your session is complete, you may notice an overall change in your body.  You may feel more relaxed both physically and mentally and after a series of sessions, you may notice an improvement in your overall health.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are there any side-effects?
When acupuncture is provided by a properly qualified practitioner there should be very few side effects. The only side effects are possible bruising where the needle was inserted or some spot bleeding. There could also be some dizziness or fainting if you are over hungry or needle phobic.
  • Do you offer health fund rebates?
Under the regulation of AHPRA, clients can be assured of the efficacy and standard of their care. Rebates are available with all major Health Funds but speak to your health fund to confirm your level of cover.
  • Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by an experienced practitioner using sterile needles. Here at Natural Hair Health Acupuncture, we used pre-sterilised, single-use disposable acupuncture needles according to Australian standards. However, improperly performed acupuncture can cause potentially adverse reactions in individual cases.
  • How long is a session of acupuncture?
Depending on the condition, acupuncture sessions will range from 20mins to 40mins.
  • Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture rarely ‘hurts’. The most that people experience is a dull ache around the base of the inserted needle or a slight tingling feeling when the needle is inserted. Fear of pain from acupuncture is one of the most common reasons why people forgo acupuncture or if they have a phobia to needles. Often, to the astonishment of those who experience acupuncture, it doesn’t hurt and feels very calming and relaxing.
  • Do I need to rest after a session?
Most people find acupuncture relaxing and often feel very calm after a session. You may feel a little tired or sleepy and should take this into account if you are planning to drive long distance or operate heavy machinery. You should refrain from vigorous exercise after a session and, ideally, give yourself some time to rest. It is also advisable not to drink alcohol for several hours after a session.
